About Leslie Fehling
Welcome! I hope you enjoy this peek into the pages of my watercolor journals.
Celebrating the everyday things of life in a sketchbook is my way of remembering and appreciating them. Drawing helps me to slow down and really see the world around me. There is so much beauty right in front of us, if we’ll only open our eyes. That’s what sketching is all about.
When I draw something, there’s a connection that is created. Years later I can look at a sketch and recall not only the place and time, but also how I felt in that moment. The act of sketching is a form of meditation for me. The cares of the world melt away and time seems to stand still as I focus on recreating the scene in front of me on the pages of my sketchbook.
Sketches have a spontaneity to them that I love. They aren’t labored over. I don’t set out to create a masterpiece, but rather to respond to something that moves me in some way. I love painting my home and garden, and the rural area where I live, but I’m also incredibly inspired by the places I travel to. (See all of my travel sketchbooks at http://www.picturetrail.com/everydayartist )
Pen and ink drawings form the basis of most of my sketches, but the temptation to add watercolor is usually too strong to resist. Playing with colors is just so much fun! The transparency of the paints and the ability to layer colors and watch the surprising results are what I never tire of. If I paint with watercolors for the rest of my life, I’ll still be learning more about them.
Painting grounds me and brings me moments of exhilaration, contentment, and pure happiness. What more can I ask for than that?
